ACTIVATED CARBON

Activated carbon pellets (also known as activated charcoal) filter out all the harmful chemicals, metals, mold, and other nasty things you don't want in your terrarium or houseplant soil. Add them directly above your terrarium's drainage layer or mix them into your plant soil to filter out the bad stuff.

The charcoal is also ideal for aquarium filtration. It comes in practical, resealable bags.

A main advantage is the reduction of unpleasant odors, this applies to plants, terrariums and aquariums.

Benefits for plants
By adding activated charcoal to the soil, you protect the root system from potential pests and mold. While it's not 100% effective, it does provide an additional safety barrier. It also creates a grainier, airier texture that prevents excess moisture in the soil.

Advantages for terrariums
In terrariums, we add activated carbon to both the soil mix and the drainage layer. This way, the water is forced through the activated carbon with each cycle, maximizing its effectiveness. We've conducted many tests with identical terrariums where the only difference was the addition of activated carbon, and the reduction in mold growth is incredible.

How is the coal activated?
Treating regular coal with high temperatures causes it to expand. This creates many tiny air pockets. These air pockets form the basis of the coal's adsorption potential and make it about 100 times more effective (with more surface area) than regular charcoal.
