How to use Calathea soil
Using the mixture is very easy! Start by removing as much of the old soil as possible. Gently squeeze the pot while holding it sideways to loosen the plant. Rinse the roots under lukewarm tap water to remove any remaining bits and debris.
Also, remove any dead leaves that may still be on the plant with scissors. Now your plant is ready for its fresh Calathea mix. Place a thin layer of Calathea mix on the bottom of the pot.
Place the plant in the pot and slowly add the Calathea mix around the sides to fill the pot. Ensure that the point where the roots meet the plant is just covered by the Calathea mix.
Gently tap the Calathea mix into the pot. Be sure to water the Calathea mix thoroughly after repotting, as this helps the mixture and roots to take hold.
Why the Calathea mix works
The Calathea mix consists of both perlite and vermiculite, which ensures adequate drainage while the vermiculite retains some moisture. This helps keep the soil consistently moist. The root system grows healthier and larger, and you won't need to water the plant as often. This gives you more time to admire your plants!
The original habitat of the Calathea & Maranta plants
Calathea and Maranta originate from the South American jungles, where they are accustomed to surviving under the canopy of larger plants and trees. They thrive in low sunlight, as they are adapted to this environment. The jungle floor has a moist and nutrient-rich substrate full of fallen leaves and other debris. Calathea substrate mimics this environment.
Tip! Since Calathea and Maranta like to stay moist, use a plastic or ceramic pot. Clay and other types of pots are porous, meaning they release moisture. Plastic and ceramic retain moisture better.
Care of Calathea & Maranta plants
Calathea and Maranta plants can be fussy, and their care is similar to that of Alocasia plants. Bright, indirect light, consistently moist soil, and warm temperatures ensure healthy and beautiful foliage. They can become overwatered, so make sure your plant has adequate drainage.
