How to use the Hoya substrate
Using the mixture is very easy! Start by removing as much of the old soil as possible. Gently squeeze the pot while holding it sideways to loosen the soil around the plant. Hold the roots under lukewarm tap water to remove any remaining bits and debris.
Also, remove any dead leaves that may still be on the plant with scissors. Now your plant is ready for its fresh hoya soil. Place a thin layer of hoya substrate on the bottom of the pot.
Place the plant in the pot and slowly add Hoya soil around the sides to fill the pot. Ensure that the point where the roots meet the plant is just covered with Hoya soil.
Gently tap the Hoya substrate into the pot. Be sure to water the Hoya substrate thoroughly after repotting, as this helps the mixture and roots to take hold.
Why the Hoya substrate works
This hoya substrate contains everything your hoya could want. The added activated charcoal helps prevent root rot. The high proportion of pine bark and coconut husks provides more space and aeration for the larger roots. The mix drains relatively quickly, as hoyas prefer to dry out between waterings. The activated charcoal prevents root rot and other fungal problems in the hoya substrate.
The original habitat of the Hoya plants
Hoyas originate from tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia. They are typically trailing or climbing and epiphytic, meaning they can grow from the ground onto surfaces such as trees and rocks. Their care is similar to that of Araceae, except that the Hoya substrate may dry out more frequently between waterings.
Care of Hoya plants
Hoyas thrive in bright, indirect sunlight and can tolerate dry conditions for quite some time. Similar to succulents, you can tell if a hoya is thirsty by feeling its leaves. If they aren't as plump as they used to be, it's likely thirsty and could use a drink.
