How to use cactus soil
Using the mix is easy! Start by removing as much of the old soil as possible. Gently squeeze the pot while holding it sideways to loosen the plant. Rinse the roots under lukewarm tap water to remove any remaining pieces and debris.
You should also remove any dead leaves still attached to the plant with scissors. Now your plant is ready for its fresh cactus soil. Add a small layer of cactus soil to the bottom of the pot.
Place the plant in the pot and slowly add cactus soil to the sides to fill the pot. Make sure the point where the roots meet the plant is just buried under the cactus soil.
Gently pat the succulent soil into the pot. Be sure to water the cactus soil thoroughly after repotting, as this helps the mixture and the roots establish.
Why cactus soil works
Grainy, airy, and well-draining are the key characteristics of this mix. To prevent overwatering, it contains a large amount of perlite, pumice, and horticultural sand. This prevents root rot. The nutrients are designed to support your plant's root, stem, and leaf growth.
The original habitat of cacti and succulents
Most cacti and succulents originate from dry desert environments. These habitats have long dry periods and few nutrients in the water. Both types of plants use their leaves and bodies to store water for these periods. Desert locations are generally sandy and rocky and drain quickly. This cactus soil mimics this environment.
Care of cacti & succulents
Cacti and succulents include thousands of species. Water the cactus soil every two weeks during the warmer seasons (spring and summer) and once a month during the cooler seasons (fall and winter). Fertilize only during the warmer seasons with a special cactus and succulent fertilizer.
Our cactus soil contains nutrients for at least 180 days, so you won't need to add fertilizer until a new warmer period begins. Some succulents require more frequent watering. A good tip for succulents is to give them a drink when their leaves start to feel soft.
Make sure you completely wet the cactus soil when watering. A common misconception is that you should only water a little at a time. Imagine a cactus in the desert. If it receives water from the rain once, it will be completely soaked for a while. Give your plant time to absorb some of the water into the cactus soil.
Cacti and succulents prefer a lot of sunlight and can tolerate several hours of sun, depending on the species.
Building an open terrarium
An open terrarium requires special soil to grow well. The biggest risk is rotting roots of succulents and cacti. With our cactus and succulent soil, you'll have a good start.
